It wasn't that random...I remember seeing hints in Order of the Phoenix and thinking, "I wonder if they'd end up as a couple?" And lo, it turned out true. I was actually pleased, but did wish there was more to help flesh it out. (I never got into the Sirius/Remus shipping.)
